Academics

Exchange students can choose courses from across the University of Hertfordshire’s curriculum, including business, arts, communication, psychology, and a variety of fields within the humanities and sciences. The list of courses offered to exchange students at the University of Hertfordshire can be found in the attachments below.  When searching for courses, please note:

A means fall semester
B means spring semester
A/B means that the course is offered in both fall and spring semesters
AB means that the course lasts all year and can only be taken by full-year exchange students
Most courses at UH are 15 UK credits, which is equivalent to 3-4 US credits.

Hertfordshire Business School Modules
Computer Science Modules
Education Modules
Engineering Modules
Biological and Environmental Sciences Modules
Humanities Modules
Law Modules
Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics Modules
Psychology Modules

While some of the coursework may be from previous years, students should expect similar coursework for the semester they are considering.
Accommodations

Exchange students at the University of Hertfordshire are encouraged to live in on-campus housing. Accommodation is available on both of UH’s campuses, the College Lane campus and the de Havilland campus, which are a 20-minute walk from each other and connected by a free university shuttle service offered every 10 minutes daily.

A variety of room types are available, including single and double rooms, private and shared bathrooms, and traditional or apartment-style residence halls. These typically range from £88.97($114.88)/week for the twin room to £175.28($226.30)/week for the studio room (with options in-between).  Students will apply for housing on the UH Accommodation webpage after being officially accepted by UH and receiving their UH student ID number. Full information on accommodation at UH is available at their student accommodation page. Students may choose to purchase a “bedding pack” from UH or bring or purchase their own bedding.

The University of Hertfordshire guarantees accommodation to all new international students that have applied for campus accommodation by the end of August and who already hold an offer of a place at the University.

Insurance

Every student going abroad through UCCS is required to obtain or show proof of a comprehensive international health insurance plan that includes emergency evacuation and repatriation. UCCS recommends a minimum coverage amount of $200,000.00. Please visit our insurance page for more information and to see the UCCS recommended international health insurance provider. Rates will vary depending on the student and the duration of stay.

Immigration and Visas

Students are required to either obtain a Short-Term Study Visa or Tier 4 (General) Student Visa depending on the length of time that the student is studying at the University of Hertfordshire. You can learn more about both types of visas, as well as how to apply, by visiting the U.K. government website.

Students are encouraged to research the country to which they are going. The Department of State provides overviews of country information on their website.

Health and Safety
Health and safety are paramount to a successful experience studying abroad. We encourage students to research health and safety considerations of the destination in which they wish to go. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provide up to date and comprehensive information about health and safety abroad. Please visit their websites to find more information.

Costs and Tuition

UCCS students that have been accepted to study at Hertfordshire as an exchange student will pay tuition and fees to UCCS for the appropriate number of credits (12-15) at their normal UCCS tuition rate. Students should expect to pay the following costs in country and out-of-pocket; airfare, housing, meals, books and supplies.

Financial Aid
Students are eligible to receive financial aid for this program as long as they maintain full-time status while abroad. Before departure students will need to receive pre-approval on all course work that they intend to take via their academic advisor or a faculty member through a study away form that can be obtained in the Global Engagement Office. Financial aid will not be released early for education abroad purposes. For specific questions regarding financial aid, students should contact the UCCS financial aid office directly.

Scholarships
Students are eligible to continue to receive most scholarships and grants that they would receive normally during the semester as long as there are not stipulations that students need to be on-campus. Students should confirm this with their appropriate contact for the scholarship. Students wishing to apply for scholarships for study abroad should visit our scholarship website.

Hatfield, Hertfordshire

Hatfield is located in Hertfordshire and has a population of 39,201 as of 2011. Hatfield is 20 miles (30 kilometres) north of London and is connected to the capital via
the A1(M) and direct trains to London King's Cross, Finsbury Park and Moorgate.

Social life
The main focus for entertainment for students at the University of Hertfordshire is The Forum Hertfordshire, which hosts events most week nights for students and larger events which are open to the public.
On the College Lane campus there is a student pub called The Elehouse, and the de Havilland campus is home to Club de Havilland.
There is also a wide range of societies organised by University students through the Hertfordshire Students' Union.

Shopping
There are 2 main supermarkets in Hatfield: Tesco, which is on the outskirts, and Asda in the town centre.
There are also Students' Union shops on both campuses supplying:
  • Food
  • Stationery
  • University of Hertfordshire Clothing

The town centre is small, but has a regular market and a farmers' market on the first Sunday of the month.

Hatfield is also home to an outlet mall called The Galleria located between the College Lane and de Havilland campuses. It contains a variety of shops and restaurants - many of which offer discounts to students.

Getting around
A free park and ride shuttle bus is available between the College Lane and de Havilland campuses.

The shuttle runs every 10/15 minutes during term time - from early morning until late at night after The Forum Hertfordshire closes.

The University-owned bus service Uno provides further access to a wide area.

Getting around by car is also simple with the A1M running alongside the town and the M1 and M25 only a few minutes drive away.
