Program Description:

Culture and Lifestyle within the Blue Zone regions of Okinawa, Japan

Program Information

This program will provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in their studies while exploring culture concepts and traditions and healthy lifestyle of the Blue Zones region of Okinawa.

Course and Credit Information

Undergraduate Credit: 3 credits HSCI 4890: Special Topics (Culture and Lifestyle within the Blue Zone regions of Okinawa)

Students can opt to participate in the program not for credit. Priority acceptance will be given to those students seeking credit.

Dates and Itinerary

The dates of the trip are May 28th through June 5th, and a detailed itinerary can be found below.
May 28th: Depart for Okinawa, Japan
May 29th: Arrival in Okinawa, transfer to hotel
May 30: Breakfast at the hotel, visit Makishi Market, orientation brunch
May 31st: Breakfast at the hotel, guest lecture on longevity and overall wellness in Okinawa, social impact experience
June 1st: Breakfast at the hotel, visit Okinawa World, Gyokusendo Cave Walk, Kingdom Village, group dinner
June 2nd: Breakfast at the hotel, Visit Kouri Island, Kouri Bridge, Okinawa Benino Tart Making Class
June 3rd: Breakfast at the hotel, free day at Cape Zanpa
June 4th: Breakfast at the hotel, visit with locals at Ogimi Village, lunch with locals, farming experience, group dinner
June 5th: Breakfast at the hotel, return to the US

Cost and Payment Information

Estimated Total Program Cost: $6,545

The estimated total program cost breaks down as follows:
  • $150 International Affairs non-refundable Education Abroad registration fee (due March 1, 2023)
  • $3,895 program fee (non-refundable payment due to WorldStrides by March 3, 2023)
  • $2,500 round trip flight to Japan (estimate as of 4/27/2022, actual group flight will be finalized by September 1st)
Included in the program fee are the following items:​​
  • Hotel and ground transportation
  • Meals listed on the itinerary (and tipping for listed meals)
  • Entrance fees to any sites and group activities listed on the itinerary
  • Round trip flight to Japan
  • Travel medical insurance
NOT included in the program cost are: 
  • UCCS tuition (if taken for credit)
  • Additional meals
  • Personal spending money
  • Optional travel/trip protection insurance
Participants will pay the program fee and international flight fee of $6,395 directly to WorldStrides online by March 3, 2023; please see their website for more information (payment link will become live by October 30, 2022). This payment will be broken down between a deposit due about 15 days prior to the final payment deadline, and a full remainder payment due by March 3rd.

**Please note that students seeking credit will be billed tuition on their UCCS account at their regular student rate for the Summer 2023 session.**

NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS:  A negative COVID-19 test is required by the US Federal Government for re-entry into the U.S.A.  All participants, please be aware that there may be extra costs if you test positive for COVID-19 and are unable to return to the USA.  Costs may include an accrual of extra fees such as additional COVID-19 testing, accommodation, change of flight fees, and meals.


All housing accommodations are in a hotel with breakfast provided. The hotel offers internet access, double occupancy rooms, and dining facilities.

Passports and Immigration

All participants need to have a valid passport to participate in this program. The passport needs to be valid at least 6 months after the anticipated return date to the US. Participants holding a U.S. Passport do not need a visa or additional permission for this program. Those who do not hold a U.S. Passport should check with the closest embassy or consulate for the country they hold their passport from for entry requirements.

Health and Safety

Health and safety are paramount to a successful experience studying abroad. We encourage students to research health and safety considerations of the destination they wish to travel to.
