Literary Places & the Rhetoric of Public Memory - United Kingdom

Program Information

Join UCCS Department of English faculty on a tour of England, Summer 2020! Students taking this travel-study course will visit sites which demonstrate the influence of public memory on the building and shaping of London and the United Kingdom. Students will visit London, Canterbury, Bath, Tintern Abbey, Stratford-Upon-Avon and great houses across the English countryside. While visiting historic sites, attending performances at the the Globe and the RSC, and delving into the rich literary and rhetorical significance of these physical locations, student can earn credit in English, History or Humanities.

There will be information sessions for this trip on the following dates, come learn more about the trip:
  • August 30, 10am-12pm in UC Room 304
  • September 18, 4-6pm in UC Room 304
  • October 18, 10am-12pm in Osborne B138
  • November 20, 4-6pm in UC Room 304
  • December 6 10am-12pm in UC Room 304

**Please note tuition for this course is not included in the program fee.Tuition will be charged to your UCCS student account for payment**

May 31 - June 12, 2020

May 31 - Depart Denver for London (overnight flight)

June 1 - Arrival in London; transfer to hotel; lunch on own; walking tour and Tube tutorial; group dinner
 
June 2  - Breakfast at hotel; guided tour of Westminster Abby; self-guided tour of National Portrait Gallery; lunch on own; guided tour of British Library Special Collections; Global Theatre Performance (showtime TBD); dinner on own

June 3  - Breakfast at hotel; transfer to Penshurst; visit Penshurst Place House & Gardens; lunch on own; transfer to London; dinner on own

June 4 - Breakfast at hotel; transfer to and sightseeing of Strawberry Hill; lunch on own; half-day World War II London guided coach tour; dinner on own

June 5 - Breakfast at hotel; free day in London for independent exploration; group dinner

June 6 - Breakfast at hotel; transfer to Canterbury; lunch and dinner on own; transfer to London

June 7 - Breakfast at hotel; depart for Bath; en route visit Chawton House Library and Jane Austen House; lunch and dinner on own

June 8 - Breakfast at hotel; visit Tintern Abbey; lunch on own in Tintern Village; free afternoon for independent exploration of Bath; dinner on own

June 9 - Breakfast at hotel; day trip to The Peak District & Chatsworth; lunch on own; visit Chatsworth House, Garden, Farmyard & Playground; dinner on own

June 10 - Breakfast at hotel; depart for Oxford; visit Oxford College; group lunch; transfer to Stratford-Upon-Avon

June 11 - Breakfast at hotel; sightseeing of Shakespeare's Birthplace & Grave; lunch on own; sightseeing of Stoneleigh Abbey; group dinner; evening performance at Royal Shakespeare Company

June 12 - Breakfast at hotel; transfer to London; depart for Denver

Total Cost of Program: $4,715*

NEW DEADLINES AND PAYMENT DETAILS FOR THE PROGRAM COSTS AS OF 1/29/2020
The fees outlined below exclude the UCCS Education Abroad $50 non-refundable registration/application fee which is paid to UCCS International Affairs-form is accessible in your student portal or in the International Affairs Office. 

1. Program provider non-refundable airfare deposit: $150 (Due to Tumlare*** on or before February 25)
Pay online with credit card at https://tumlare.wufoo.com/forms/z1ya4klh03wqtbb/ or mail a check that needs to arrive by February 25 with your name and UCCS program title to: Tumlare Corporation / 271 Waverley Oaks Road, Suite 209 / Waltham, MA 02452.  There will be a transaction fee of 3.5% on all credit card payments.

2. Program fee balance due: $4,515 (Due to Tumlare** on or before April 10)
Pay online with credit card at https://tumlare.wufoo.com/forms/z1ya4klh03wqtbb/ or mail a check that needs to arrive by April 10 with your name and UCCS program title to: Tumlare Corporation / 271 Waverley Oaks Road, Suite 209 / Waltham, MA 02452.  There will be a transaction fee of 3.5% on all credit card payments. This fee is non-refundable UNLESS the trip does not meet minimum enrollments.  Students and community members wishing to participate in the program must pay the non-refundable airfare deposit AND this program fee balance in order to secure a spot on the trip. 

*Included in the cost are the following: international airfare, hotels, local transportation & guides, some meals (1 group lunch, 2 group dinners), entrance fees
**Not included in the cost are the following: non-program meals, international health insurance, UCCS tuition (charged separately to your student account)

***Tumlare is the program provider that is being used for this faculty-directed program abroad.​

Payment of the Program Provider Cost and the International Airfare will be to Tumlare. They have set up a payment page at https://tumlare.wufoo.com/forms/z1ya4klh03wqtbb/

Passports and Immigration


All participants need to have a valid passport to participate in this program. The passports need to be valid at least 6 months after the anticipated departure from United Kingdom. Visas are not required for U.S. citizens, if you are not a U.S. citizen you will need obtain a visa on your own.
